2011 Production Challenges
Was it the prolonged dry spell? The excessive heat? The wet spring and nitrogen loss? What has been the biggest impact on your reduced corn yields this year? If you are in one of the challenged production areas of 2011, you may be asking yourself this question as you harvest your crop.
The wet spring led to planting delays in many areas. Were you looking at reduced yields from the time you finally put the seed in the ground?
What caused the extreme variability throughout the field? Was it the water holding capacity of the soil? Or was it all of the above?
What would we have produced under the same growing conditions 20 years ago?
As I walk fields this fall, there is evidence of all of the above and more. I would like to hear your thoughts.
