One of the most common questions that I get from our friends in the field is in regards to personnel issues. How do I attract and keep quality employees in our business? Or, how do I evaluate potential business partners when an opportunity is presented to me? Over my career, I have been fortunate enough to be apart of hiring hundreds of people and forming business relationships with multiple partners. I have made mistakes and learned from them. The best philosophy that I can share in the process is to look at four areas: ability, resources, track record and desire. Ability is the skill set, or potential skill set, of the individual. Resources can take many forms, but one of the most common I look at is the resource of intellect. Someone’s track record may not necessarily be a similar job or business venture, but something that you can look at and determine a pattern of success. And finally, desire determines if they have the drive to accomplish your common goals. I recommend using these four principles whenever you evaluate personnel and or business ventures.
